Ayurveda stipulates that before undergoing any other major treatment detoxification of the body is essential. Panchakarma in Sanskrit means “five actions” or “five treatments” used to clean the body of toxic materials left by disease and poor nutrition. In the normal state, the body has the innate ability to efficiently process and remove these waste materials. However due to one’s repeated dietary lack of caution, poor exercise patterns, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition the digestive enzymes, metabolic co-factors, hormones, and agnis which regulate the body’s internal metabolism become disorganised. This leads to the accumulation and spread of toxins throughout the body resulting in disease.

These toxins generate waste matter called Ama in Ayurveda. Ama is a harmful substance that needs to be completely evacuated from the body to regain health. Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment is a set of five therapeutic treatments for the complete detoxification of the body. In fact, Panchakarma benefits even healthy people who undergo Panchakarma treatments once in every five years to rid the body of all the impurities and chemical toxins it accumulates over the years. In some cases, Panchakarma alone can cure many chronic diseases that further treatments may not be required. Excess Doshas are removed & imbalances in them are corrected through Panchakarma treatments which involve processes like daily massages and oil baths, herbal Enemas, Nasal administrations etc.

- Purvakarma-the pre-purification preparation
Before the actual detoxification begins the body must be prepared in prescribed methods to encourage it to release toxins as there can also be periods of discomfort associated with the intense release of toxins. Snehana and Swedana are two procedures used for this:
Snehana
Also known as the Oleation therapy, Snehana is basically a pre-operative or Poorva karma procedure of Panchakarma. It is basically a type of lubrication system for the human body. This therapy is used prior to the detox therapy & is extremely mandatory for Panchakarma treatments.
It is a full-body massage with medicated herbal oils where the oil is massaged into the body in a particular way to move the toxins towards the gastro-intestinal tract. It also penetrates the skin leaving the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple. This helps to remove stress and nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given for 3 to 7 days as indicated.
Swedana
Swedana is sudation or sweating procedure done to stimulate your sweat glands to increase perspiration and circulation. It alleviates vitiated Vata and Kapha Dosha & helps to reduce pain, stiffness, heaviness and coldness in your body. Swedana is given every day immediately following Snehana. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further loosen the toxins from the body. It liquefies the toxins and facilitates their movement towards the gastro-intestinal tract. - Vamana
Congestion in the lungs causing repeated bronchitis attacks, colds, cough or asthma can be effectively treated with Vamana process in which therapeutic vomiting is induced. This Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment eliminates the Kapha causing the excess mucus. Vamana therapy is recommended primarily for Kapha-dominated conditions like obesity, Asthma and hyperacidity. - Virechana
When excess bile (Pitha) is secreted and gets accumulated in the Gall Bladder, Liver and Small Intestine, it results in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice. In the Purgation therapy Virechana administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative is done to alleviate these conditions. Virechana therapy is highly effective for Pitha-dominated conditions like Herpes, Jaundice, Colitis etc. - Nasya
In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the doorway to the brain and also the entry way to one’s inner self. Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment Nasya is done to eliminate the excess of bodily humours accumulated in the sinuses, throat, nose or head areas. Nasal administration of medicated drops reduces the effects of Doshas & they are eliminated through the nearest possible opening – the nose.
- Basti
Basti is the most effective Panchakarma treatment of Vata disorders. As the colon is the predominant location for Vata in the body herbal decoctions or any medicated oil preparations are introduced into the rectum combat the problems related to Vata. Basti therapy relieves constipation, digestive problems, chronic fever, colds, sexual disorders, Kidney stones, heart pains, backache, sciatica and various joint pains.
